How can I get my chihuahua to behave for my husband?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I adopted a chihuahua who was believed to have been rescued from a puppy mill. She was obviously over bred and was grateful to have been saved. She is a wonderfully affectionate dog. She is phenomenal with my children as well as with me. She truly is a joy, however when my husband calls to her to take her outside she instantly cowers. She will leak urine on the floor when he approaches her. I think she was likely abused by a man previously. Is there any way to train them both to change this behavior?

Yes from the sound of it, I think she was abused too.

Make sure your husband isn’t staring at the dog for one. Cause the dog will take it as a threat.
Also, Let the dog approach him. If he’s going to the dog, of course she’s gonna run. In time, she’ll warm up. Just no eye contact and have him feed her and take her for walks. Good Luck!

Where can i find a chihuahua puppy for sale in the pittsburgh pa area?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I have looked in the local newspaper with no luck. I have a year old Spayed female chihuahua and she is wonderful and I want another. Please heip me find one in Pittsburgh PA. I donot like to drive far. Thank You .

Whatever you do, DO NOT get them from a pet store!! They get their dogs from Puppymills and it’s just horrible. They get sick and have behavioral issues from improper socialization and being taken from their mothers too soon. They can be harder to potty-train because they’ve always been allowed to go anywhere they want. The conditions in a puppymill are disgusting. Our dog is a puppymill rescue. She was only in one for a year and we’ve had her for 3 years. It was just this last year that she’s gained the confidence to play with another dog and to enjoy being petted.

"DO NOT, under any circumstances, buy a dog in a petstore. Our research establishes that 98% of the dogs in petstores come from what we consider to be puppymllls. You are not saving that puppy, you are sentencing it’s parents to lives of misery."

How can I train my chihuahua not to be aggressive?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I adopted a chihuahua (Selena) from a breeder and she is one year old (she has already been spayed as well). The previous owner never took her anywhere, and the dog was never around anyone but her and her husband. Because of this, she is aggressive towards strangers and to my fiance; she will try to bite anyone who tries to touch her, except for me. Is there anything that I can do to reverse this behavior, or is it too late to socialize her? All tips are appreciated!

Chihuahua’s are agressive and energetic creatures. I have a teacup. They need lots of exercise that would help in etting ride of some aggressive behavior..play with her and teach her tricks..and have your fiance sit down and play with her too along with you…find a way to teach her tricks and teach your fiance to do the exact same thing (that way it’s consistent) and perhaps she will grow to trust him. It’s not to late to train her but it sounds like a lot of work at this stage. Introduce her to only one or two people at a time because they are over anxious creatures and may feel threatened by too many people in the same room or surrounding her. Mine is the friendliest dog there is but if there are too many people around he generally retreats and backs off. If someone were to try and pet him in that phase, the dog looks at it like a threat. I would talk to someone who knows about CHI’s and your vet. they may even have a better solution.
good luck

How do I get my dog to come to me at the park?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I have a 11 month old dog. He loves going to the park. We usually meet a friend with her dog. My dog is very excited and smells them in a rough way and the two dogs start playing roughly. I dont hold on to the leash because the other dog is trained not to run away. When he goes running to other dogs i need him to trained to come!

First you have to put in your head that your dog is your follower and you are the leader. I recomend that you train him to come and things like that when you guys are alone and the more tricks you teach him the more obediant the dog will be.
But the thing to remmember is that you cant ever and by this i mean ever show any submissiveness to your dog. What i mean is that when ever you are close to your dog, it means that you are training him/her, because if you show some kinda of submisibness the dog will take advantage of that.

Also if your dog is hyper and all crazy like mine, youll have alot more work to do, i recomment to get them really tired before training them or they will not listen

ONe more thing, to train him to come, use some kind of toy that the dog is obsess with. The way to do this is, put the dog in a leash, make the dog walk right by your side and throw the toy far where the dog can see it. THen walk close to the toy and walk around it really close but dont let the dog grab it, then when you see that the dog is paying more atention to you then the toy, tell him to sit or do something and then tell him to go get it and come back (stay holding the leash). If he doesnt come back start puling the leah

and thats about it, its good to start when the dog is really young like i did, cause now my dog only goes play whne i tell him to.

What is the Best dog Breed I should get for my family?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

I am looking to buy a dog but cant seem to chose one. I am wanting everyones opinion on what kind of dog do they think will be the best for my family. I have two children. Ages 5 and 2. I own my own home and have a big back yard although its not fenced. I am also a stay at home mother so the dog will get plenty attention. What will be the best dog for my family? Small dog or Big. I dont care, as long as it will be a great dog.

I think you should do some research , if you have children i think a Lab would be good but they will have to be train when they are very young because like all puppies they will need training , also golden retrievers, boxers are great it has to be I think a girl if you planning to keep inside is a lot easier to train and also make sure you fix her. I had many dogs in my life ar the moment i have 3. Good luck.

How can I train my rottweiler not to eat food from strangers?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

How do I go about training my rottweiler not to eat food from strangers? Or even to eat food from his bowl only?
He’s 3 months old. I think this is very important for his own security, as well as mine! Thank you all in advance!

Keep him indoors. I’m not sure I see why this is a problem, are people on the street just trying to give him food? Or are you just worried this will happen? (It definitely won’t)

My yard is really big and it’s a pain picking the poo up everyday. So how do I train my dogs to poo only in one spot like in a corner or somewhere? Thanks Alot!!

Put their poo in the spot where you want them to go, and take them to that spot every morning.

How to teach my chihuahua to be nice to people?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

My chihuahua only obeys me and my mom. She hates everyone else and I want her to be nice to other people, I try yelling at her when she tries snapping at other people, but she ALWAYS continues being mean. Is there a way to teaching her to be nice to people besides me? I don’t want to keep her locked in a room if I have people over. People like her, but she doesn’t like people.

She is frightened of people which is why she snaps.
Fear is displayed by, fighting: which is what she does and becomes agressive, flight: running away, freezing, standing still or laying down without moving and fooling around.

Put her on a lead when anyone comes to your house and ask them no to touch, look or talk to your dog whatever she does, this will start to take the pressure off her and within a short time she will settle down and be less fearful.
Once she doesn’t growl at people allow her off lead and ask them to continue not to look, touch or talk to her, give them a couple of treat and tell them when she comes over to sniff, just to drop the treats onto the floor, make sure you put her back on the lead before they leave as the energy in the room changes when people come and go and she may start acting up again as dogs understand our world through the energy we give off, excited energy is negative energy in the dog world so she will disply fear again in the way she knows that works for her.

Do this for a few weeks with EVERY visitor and you can even set it up and have people call just to train this and don’t push her too quickly, when you think it is going well don’t push it any further stop when she is winning.

What type of dog fits my lifestyle and environment?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I’m thinking of getting a dog. The only problem is that we live next to a reserve, so i’m thinking that it should fit into a few criterias:

- Does not bark excessively (many people walking in the reserve)
- An able guard dog, just enough to keep strangers from entering our property
- Not a hard dog to train, as i’ve never owned a dog before.
- Preferably not aggressive.

Are there any dogs which have these traits? I’d really appreciate some answers, i’m no dog expert so this will help me a lot. Thanks.
