How can I get my dog to greet other dogs properly?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

How can I get my dog to act like a normal dog when he meets other dogs? He runs up to them and starts barking and running round them, occasionally trying to bite them. I got him from a rescue home a few months ago and he still hasn’t changed. He’s a Jack russel cross but he doesn’t nip or anything. I just want him to behave like a normal dog when he’s around other dogs.
I walk him in a nearby field and let him of the leash. He’s also neutered.

I have a shelter dog, too. He’s a Basset Hound and likes to bark and bite new dogs. Odd behavior from a short beast that likes to sleep all day, eh? This one time he tried to get into a fight with a Boxer that was 20 lbs heavier and whose owner had a lot more tattoos than I did.

So, what gives? The leash!

Dogs act completely differently when they’re on a leash than when they are running about freely. My dog was scared and defensive when he was on a leash and met new dogs. I think he felt trapped and ready to attack. Possibly due to hard time spent at the pound? I’d say that the solution to your woes would be to introduce your dog to new dogs in an open area, unleashed. It worked for my mentally scarred Basset. Now, he cohabitates with a really annoying puppy that pesters him up the wall. No fights, but proper etiquette between the two has been established.

How do i introduce my little chihuahua into a home with a cat?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I just got a baby girl chihuahua and i already have a small cat. The chihuahua is a lot smaller then the cat. How do I introduce the two so they can become friends?

My Chi’s grew up with 2 adult male cats. JUst let them meet and keep an eye on them for a while. You’ll know if there’s an issue. It’ll depend on the cat. They’ll probably end up playing together within the hour. They’ll either ignore each other or they’ll follow each other around and sleep together sometimes and play together.

What is the best formula to use for handfeeding puppies from birth?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Looking for the best puppy formula for Jack Russell Pups, The mother is getting ready to have the puppies and in previous litters she will not let her puppies eat. I am caring for this dog, she is not mine. I have alot of experience with puppies but not feeding the day of birth? Not sure when I should start feeding either

How ***STUPID*** can people BE???
RE-breeding a BAD bitc-h???

Handrearing pups is AWFUL!!! They *DIE*!!!
You MUST feed every TWO hours, day & NIGHT !!! ***NOT*** bottle feed=TUBE em!!! And make them eliminate & use a ***REAL**** "store-bought" formula(Just Born is better than Esbilac) =NOT some stupid "homemade" CRAP!!! & keep them on a heating pad. WEIGH DAILY!
etc,etc.

Keep the trash can handy to toss the CARCASSES!!! And…..stock up on COFFEE. You can’t go anywhere(or SLEEP) for ***3***weeks!

How long does your chihuahua sleep at night?

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Just wondering on average. I got my first chihuahua today. I love him to death… I’m just trying to find out what to expect tonight. Also, I still need a name. I’ve been thinking Toby or Jasper. Any suggestions?

mine is 2 months old and he sleeps from about 10 pm to 5 am . which is like a human baby’s schedule almost . he sleeps in his crate at night . but you must kind of play with him or her and wear them down somewhat before bedtime. and when you do put him or her in the crate make sure you have toys in there with them . good luck cause the first night is always the hardest.

How do i teach my rottweiler to sleep on her blanket during the night?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

I have a 13 week old German rottweiler how can i teach her to sleep on her blanket during the night instead of moving off of it? Any ideas besides crate training?

well if it is really important for her to sleep on the bed then i would propose crate training. but usually dogs will sleep were they feel most comfortable. if they choose to sleep on the floor then thats there choice but as far as teaching her to stay on the blanket im not sure. i no if u get her a crate and put her in it at night then she will gladly go in there after the training of course on her own. hope this helps

How did getting a second dog affect your first one?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

I’m mulling over the idea of getting a second dog. I have a dog now, a dachshund. She’ll be almost a year old when I would bring this “maybe” second pup into my life.

So, for anyone who has ever brought another dog into a home with an existing dog…what effect did this have on the first dog? Did he/she seem happier? Glad to have a canine playmate? Confused? Depressed? Scared? I’m fully aware that dogs are pack animals and it is natural for them to live together, but I can’t help but worry.

Also, what effect did it have on his/her relationship with you? Did you stay close, or did both dogs grow a bit more distant from you? I always worried that if they have each other, they won’t need me! Haha, that sound a little selfish, but that was my thought. I love her very much and I would hate our “relationship” to be negatively affected.

I’ve always only had one dog at a time, so anything else you can tell me about having more than one dog would be very helpful!
Thanks to everyone who has answered so far. I’m really looking for personal experiences and stories. Please, if you’ve introduced a second dog into your home, share them with me. This is a very important decision for me.

Raymond – Ha, my pup is at the vet right now being spayed. Definitely not interested in pups (although they would be cute). I’m no backyard breeder.

I really didn’t think I needed another dog, but one day I noticed this pathetic looking little dog walking down the street in front of my house. She was skin and bones. She saw me and came over so I got her some food and water. It was as I was walking back into the house that Buddy, my foxhound mix, saw her. He rushed out the door to meet her. I’ve never seen two dogs take to each other so immediately. I tell people I didn’t adopt Bitsy. Buddy did. He insisted she come inside. He let her sleep in his bed and eat out of his food bowl. I was just amazed because Buddy was always a food guarder and at 11 years old, I didn’t expect him to change. It’s been two years now and that pathetic little dog has packed on the muscle and turned into quite a speedster. She’s a jack russell/boxer mix. She and Buddy are constant companions and even though they have their own food bowls and beds now, they still often share. Having a second dog has made Buddy happier for sure and I believe extended his life and improved the quality of it because my senior dog became playful as a pup again. I think when the dogs get along and enjoy each other’s company, it’s really a blessing to add a second dog to your household.

As far as my relationship to Buddy, I think it’s actually deepened it. Yes, he has to share my attention and I have to share his, but it’s made us appreciate each other more. It has definitely eliminated a lot of the separation anxiety Buddy had when he was an only dog.

What is a very good quality toy poodle bed that is inexpensive?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

I am adopting a 4 week old poodle ,and I want to make it feel at home when it arrives. And I am looking for a soft good quality bed. Also any tips on bringing home a new toy poodle puppy?

AHHH…so cute. The only recommendation is to buy her/him a small soft toy to sleep with. ( the same size as the pup ) After leaving mom and siblings, It makes them feel more secure when they sleep.
I just bought a bed at Bed Bath and Beyond that is very soft and cozy.
They are on sale for 9.99. Good luck with your puppy.
