How can I get my dog to greet other dogs properly?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

How can I get my dog to act like a normal dog when he meets other dogs? He runs up to them and starts barking and running round them, occasionally trying to bite them. I got him from a rescue home a few months ago and he still hasn’t changed. He’s a Jack russel cross but he doesn’t nip or anything. I just want him to behave like a normal dog when he’s around other dogs.
I walk him in a nearby field and let him of the leash. He’s also neutered.

I have a shelter dog, too. He’s a Basset Hound and likes to bark and bite new dogs. Odd behavior from a short beast that likes to sleep all day, eh? This one time he tried to get into a fight with a Boxer that was 20 lbs heavier and whose owner had a lot more tattoos than I did.

So, what gives? The leash!

Dogs act completely differently when they’re on a leash than when they are running about freely. My dog was scared and defensive when he was on a leash and met new dogs. I think he felt trapped and ready to attack. Possibly due to hard time spent at the pound? I’d say that the solution to your woes would be to introduce your dog to new dogs in an open area, unleashed. It worked for my mentally scarred Basset. Now, he cohabitates with a really annoying puppy that pesters him up the wall. No fights, but proper etiquette between the two has been established.

What dog is good with children and easy to train for first time dog owners?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I have 3 children ages 5, 10 and 14. They have been wanting a dog for years but we said no until we had out own house. Now we do. If someone could please help me pick a breed that is not nippy with kids and can be potty trained please. I do not need a puppy I am glad to get an older dog… Thanks!

-Any mix with mainly lab would be great, and there are everywhere! Try the local shelter, petfinder.com, etc. I would suggest a female for the mothering instincts!

Glad to hear the kids are getting a new friend! They are old enough to really enjoy a dog, and the lab would be like an extra little mother to them in very short time!

How can I get my chihuahua used to a walking leash?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

My chihuahua is absolutely terrified of leashes for some reason. When I latch it on, he freezes in place and trembles nonstop. When I take it off, he runs away and hides like if I’m torturing him! How can I get him used to it? Just the sight of the leash makes him run away.

Clip the leash on him & let him drag it in the house. He may shake & be upset to start. Just ignore that behavior. When he settles some. Take a hold of the leash & call him to you for treats. Take a hold of the leash & call him to you to get pet. Take him on leash to his dinner bowl. Won’t take long for him to associate the leash with good things. Then you can progress to taking him outside with the leash on. At first, just like a puppy, you follow him where he wants to go & sniff. Then you encourage him to walk along with you for treats & praise. Don’t carry this guy around. Anywhere he wants to go, he goes on leash & walking. Soon he’ll be begging you to put that leash on so he can do fun stuff.

How do I get 3 week old puppies to drink from a bottle or even eat at all?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I just lost my dog 3 days ago to Parvo now I am left with her 3 week old puppies I love them to death but I dont want to lose them. I feed them goat milk when I can and also puppy supplement. But Im worried their losing hydration and I dont have the hundreds of dollars to take em to a vet but I do wanna save them dearly what should I do?

go get puppy milk from walmart mix it then try feeding with an eyedropper they need to be fed every 4 to 5 hours at 3 weeks old so you need to figure out how to feed them at least that often or find some one who can while you are at work in about a week you can try feeding them from a shallow pan and things will get much easier you can also just give them water in the bottle to get them hydrated and dont forget you need to stimulate them to get them to go potty good luck and get them vaccinated for parvo at 6 weeks you can do it yourself just go to your local farm supply store and ask if they have dog vaccines most do and they should only cost about $5 each. much cheaper than the vet visit just make sure you read all the dirrections carefully and follow them good luck and i hope your puppies make it

Growth Stages For Dogs And Puppies

Monday, February 8th, 2010

There are very predictable stages that puppies go through as they mature. While each breed is slightly different the general timeline will be the same for all breeds of dogs. By knowing what to expect at different ages and stages you can be prepared as the owner to plan for training and socialization activities.

Dogs, just like humans, will mature at different rates. Some breeds are less boisterous and playful even as puppies and other breeds keep their puppy-like behavior far into adulthood. The following timelines are general to dogs; research your breed for specific information.

Day 1 – the puppy is born. It will be very active after the mother has cleaned it. The puppy will make lots of noise and will be very wiggly, although their eyes will be completely closed and their ears will be very close to their heads and seem almost underdeveloped. The mother dog will lick the puppies on their stomachs to stimulate them to urinate and defecate.

Day 3 – the ears will begin to appear bigger and will be held farther away from the head. The puppies will continue to make a lot of noise, particularly if they are away from the litter or the mother. Puppies should be handled minimally at this time but consistent human interaction and hearing people around is a great start to socialization.

Week 1 – by the end of the first week the puppies will be more mobile and will crawl around on their bellies and have a good sense of direction when moving towards the mother dog. The mother will leave the puppies briefly several times a day and the puppies will be OK with this. Handle the puppies daily for short periods, never completely removing them from the puppy area.

Week 2 – by the end of the second week the puppies should be walking with a fair amount of stability. The sharp puppy claws may need to be blunted to avoid injure to the littermates. The puppy’s eyes will start to open slightly and they will begin to smell towards the end of the second week. They are starting to notice noises and when people arrive. Handle the puppies daily and for longer periods.

Week 3 – puppies will be able to handle some soft, moist puppy food. They still do not have teeth so kibble is not acceptable. They have limited sight but good sense of hearing and smell. They are constantly on the move in the litter area and begin to play and socialize with each other.

Week 4 – puppy teeth are in and the litter can start on soft foods on a more continuous basis, and by the end of the month they should be able to start on dry food Puppies will start learning socialization and appropriate chewing and biting from both the mother and littermates.

Week 7 – ready to be out and about. Puppies love to run, have a good sense of mobility, scent, taste and sight. They are very active and will recognize humans by both sight and scent.

Week 8 – puppies can now be removed from the mother. They are able to eat and digest dry food and are independent in their actions.

Some breeders prefer to keep their puppies an additional 4 weeks and don’t sell them until they have been completely socialized with the litter. Many breeds do better when kept with their littermates for longer periods of time. Breeds that are prone to separation anxiety and shyness often are breeds that benefit from being left with the breeder for the additional period of time.
