All types of dogs love being in a pack; their security depends on their ability to mingle and communicate with the other dogs in the group. Over the years, however, the Golden Retriever has developed a closer relationship with human beings than with dogs. They can guide the blind, provide companionship to young children, and assist hunters. Thanks to their breeding, Golden Retrievers have evolved in such a way that they now need to frequently interact with people.
Golden Retrievers have a forgiving nature. They endlessly forgive all the mistakes their owners make. The only thing they desire from you is that you acknowledge their existence and give them a pat on the head. They love to please their owners; in fact, they are among the first three breeds of dogs to win the Obedience Trial Championships.
Since Golden Retriever’s love the company of people, it is of great importance that you ensure that they in close contact with you and your family. Include your Goden Retriever in any family activity that you organize. Normally, they don’t annoy you by barking. The only thing that makes them bark, however, is boredom. A stout, adult Golden Retriever enjoys adventures such as hiking, huntin, jogging, walking, and any other activity that requires physical exertion.
Expose your Golden Retriever to your kids ever since its earliest days and he or she will become even better with children. While this breed is very loving and friendly toward children, they can knock little children over and lick them all over the face. Your golden retriever might be great with your kids, but don’t leave your kids and your dog alone together. Your dog might inadvertently harm them according to its natural instinct if you kids accidentally poke it or pull its tail.
Golden Retrievers love water and enjoy plunging into it. If you own a swimming pool or a pond of some sort, the sight of your Golden Retreiver having a dip whenever it gets an opportunity will be a common one. They also love mud and will roll in it. It is quite normal for your dog to get dirty often. You will have to bathe your Golden Retriever every other day once it becomes an adult.
Ensure that your Golden Retriever gets plenty of fresh air, water, and shade in the summer. Heat is not really good for this breed, though they enjoy it. Take good care of your Golden Retriever in the summer and don’t let it exert itself, and it will enjoy perfect health even though the summer is at its peak.

I just moved into this nice neighborhood, and my neighbor says she is a reputable rottweiler breeder. I’ve seen a couple of her dogs (she said she has
and they look ok.
She offered me a puppy for $300, is this a fair price? Should I buy it?
I dont think she is a BYB because most of those just breed small dogs, like poodles and chihuahuas.
I knew this was going to happen with everybody saying things only about the designer breeds and saying things like all of them are coming from byb’s and saying how can we put a stop to designer breeds and not saying anything about purebreds or large breed dogs that you can get from byb’s. I’m starting to think that people don’t like small mixed breeds. It’s very sad! Any dog, any type can come from a byb. I have a Doberman that i got from a byb. Yep i went to there house met the parents of the puppies… I thought everything was great get the dog home and the next thing you know i spent lots on vet bills. Not that i mind cause i love my dog and i loved him from day one it’s just that i was mad at the breeders. So don’t think for one min. that byb’s don’t breed large breeds or purebreds cause they do. I would defiantly check really hard into them cause $300.00 is a steal. Something has to be wrong. Check in to any breeder before you buy. Sometimes people are tricky so be careful. There are good breeders out there so if you want a Rottweiler find a good breeder. You will pay more, but it’s worth it if that is what you want. Good Luck!

I have a 2 year old miniature pinscher, and she is not nice around other dogs at all. When we first got her, she met another min pin the second day we had her, and that dog nipped at her. I think this is the source of her fear. We do not know anyone else with a dog, so it is very difficult to socialize her with other dogs. We would like to get another one, but are apprehensive becasue of how vicious she gets around dogs. Does anyone have any suggestions, or have been in the same position?
You need to watch "The Dog Whisperer" on the Discovery Channel. This guy goes around and shows people how to deal with problems with their dogs. I’ve seen your case a thousand times. Watch it!

They were born June 24th. We arent giving them away just yet, they are eating regular food and everything, well we put water in it and they seem to be doing fine, but I was just wondering, what can I do to be sure they are going to a good home? I love all of them soooo much, I wish I could keep them all lol. and YES my dog is going to be fixed soon so please dont say anything about that its getting pretty old. We are already planning on charging 10 dollars because we hand fed them and it was REALLY expensive, considering she had 9 puppies, but we are sending a bad of purina puppy chow with each one of them also, just to get them started. What else can we do?
I’m having the same trouble with my kittens. I would just ask questions .. ask .. ask .. ask.
Questions to ask:
1. Do you have a house/apt/ or condo?
2. Do you have a fenced in back yard?
3. Do you have any small children?
4. Have you owned dogs before?
5. Do you currently have any dogs?
And remember .. this all depends on what kind of puppies they are. If they are good apartment dogs then no worries if the people live in an apartment. But i wouldn’t worry too much. Just make sure they look like good people who will take care of your pup.
If the people live somewhere where they can’t have animals, and they say they ARE aloud .. honestly, theres no way around that unless you are part of an animal shelter or animal rescue program .. you do not have the right to call the apt. complex where they live and ask.
But if its an aggressive dog MAKE SURE you let them know not to have it around small children .. things like that. If you don’t know too much about the breed then google your dog .. get some info about her breed .. that will help a lot.
www.dogbreedinfo.com
If you have anymore questions, just email me.
When my fiance and i got our australian shepherd the lady said she wouldn’t let him go to anyone living in an apartment .. well, we knew in about a year we would be moving out of our apt. into a house so we just lied. We really liked him and we have seen NUMEROUS people around our complex with bigger dogs then this.
So i honestly wouldn’t be too picky. I would get them into the vet for their first shots and everything. I wouldn’t of purchased my pup if he hadn’t.
If they look like they are good people, loves dogs and show that they really like the animal .. let it go
Good luck

I have a Jack Russell Terrier, just over a year old. I live in an apartment complex where a lot of people own dogs.
When I am walking my dog and he spots another dog, he wildly tries to pull me in that direction. If the dog is close, my dog lets out loud shrill screams and continues to try to pull me. It is almost impossible to control and its embarassing.
Other than that he is very well behaved for a JRT and he is real smart. Just a little wild in certain situations, this being the worst.
So what can I do to control this behavior?
he’s not aggressive in a mean way. He just is curious I think and wants to play. But he plays rough with other dogs like wrestling around and nipping (no intent to hurt). If I let him check out the other dog, They sniff, then start wrestling and the leashes get tangled up.
And then what happens? When he gets closer to the other dog, does he just say Hi and sniff ? Most JRT I’ve met are friendly. I’m not sure if you’re saying the problem is aggression, or you just don’t like his excited approach.
Okay, I just read your added comment. I think you need to arrange with other owners to let the dogs play together off-leash. Find some enclosed place where the dogs can be let loose and let them play. It looks rough to humans, but among dogs, it’s just play. There’s a lot of chasing and mock-biting. Choose dogs his own size. I don’t think your dog did anything wrong. I would not punish him.

I live in California and have two small children. The people behind us just moved in and build a dog run up against the bordering fence. They also placed the dog house against the fence and the dog is trying to get over to my yard.
These dogs bark & growl all day long. If they make it through the fence or over the fence. Do I have the right to shoot the dogs?
In my opinion, not sure if it’s against the law, but if a dog comes in my yard threatening to attack me or my family I would shoot it. I would never shoot a dog without it being absolutely necessary, but in this case you can’t risk your kids being hurt or even killed. The dog may be ok if it gets out of its territory but you never know. Please don’t shoot the dog if it gets in your yard and acts ok. Call animal control or your neighbor. Have you tied talking to your neighbors about it. Try to prevent it from happening all together if you can.

Hi, I just bought a chihuahua yesterday. She is very attached to me. However, to others she is very agressive and would growl at others but never around me. Does anyone know how to fix this and make her more socialable around other people?
google "nothing in life is free" it’s a training method that can help dogs with a variety of problems by teaching them where they fall in the "pack"
The best advice I could give you would be to enrole her in obedience lessons and get help from a professional trainer. I feel that small dogs are often unbalanced and untrained because they are so easy to manage due to their size, but a dog that knows what is expected of it, is much happier than a dog with no purpose and no manners.
Another important thing; don’t FORCE her to socialize. Don’t let ppl come up and pet her when she obviously dosen’t want them to. Because she is aggressive, I wouldn’t risk doing anything without a dog trainer. You don’t want to get sued!
To get her more used to ppl, in a controled situation, have someone come in, and just sit down. If your dog wants to sniff them, that is okay as long as she isn’t being aggressive. Don’t let the person pet her. When she starts to relax and is in a calm state of mind, you can let the person offer her a treat. (as long as you don’t think they are going to get bit!!!!) Don’t praise her or focus on her at all. Just let the person hold the treat where she can come get it. If she takes it, good… that’s a good way for her to build up confidence and trust, if she dosn’t take the treat, don’t force it! Try again later. It will take time, and she may never be a social butterfly, but the more you push her, the worse she’ll get.
When she is acting scared or aggressive, it is important that you don’t try to comfort her! If you coddle her or try to sooth her, she’s going to think that you are praising her reaction and that that is the reaction that you want from her. Instead, ignore her if possible. At the very most, hold her collar so she can’t do any damage to anyone. Do not laugh at her displays, do not react at all. She should only get praise and reactions when she is behaving well.
GET PROFESSIONAL HELP!!!! that’s the BEST advice out there for you right now! Even a small dog can get to be a BIG problem with aggression!

I have two puppies from the same litter, both females and they are about four months old. The smaller one is constantly picking on her bigger sister. I understand that it is how puppies play but it starts to become a problem because the smaller one causes the other to yelp in pain and still doesn’t stop after that. She was a calm puppy before but she is now starting to growl and snap at myself and my family. Is she just trying to establish dominance? My father isn’t very understanding and says if it doesn’t stop we will have to get rid of her, but I don’t want that. Does anyone have any advice on how to stop her behavior?
This is exactly why I will never place 2 pups at the same time in the same home. This is what they do and it likely will not end for a very long time. If they are not spayed at an earlier age it could also lead to major fights when they reach maturity and the bigger one gets tired of being beat up.
I wish people would put more thought into getting puppies and realize that ONE is a big enough of a handful.
This IS one of the many reasons animal shelters get filled up daily. People get 2 cute puppies and then a few months later dump one because the dogs are acting totally normal!
People PLEASE think before you impulse buy a dog or any living animal for that matter. It’s a LOT of work, time, training and patience and money that most people can’t handle correctly.
Hire a trainer, take the pups to obedience classes ONE at a time or have someone else go with one of the pups. You are going to have to work very hard with obedience or this will not have a happy ending for one or both of the dogs.

I love dogs and I have been doing a lot of research on them for the past few months. I have looked after a dog for a few days as well and I am sure that I know the type of things they need. I really want one for myself, as a pet and I am sure that I will be able to look after it but I have a small problem. I have asthma and even though I am not allergic to all dogs (thankfully) there are some dogs that are not as helpful to me as others. I just wondered what would be the best type of dog for asthmatics. Everyone that I ask says poodles but I don’t like them because I found out that they shed a lot of hair. I want a small, short haired dog that is friendly to children and will be happy living in a family environment. If possible, they should be good with other dogs too and not so much money spent on grooming. I am happy taking it out to walks every day. If you have any sugestions, please tell me. It would be really apperciated.
Not all Labradoodles don’t cast! Like all cross breeds they come in different shapes and forms and have different traits! Some may not shed but others do that’s why it’s best to stick with a pedigree. Why not spend some time going around the dog shows, there are lots just now, try and get to a Championship show and talk to the owners and breeders. Most people at shows are more than happy to talk about there breed but don’t try to talk to them while they are being judged or watching there breed being judged, they may not give you their full attention. Go along to the benches preferably before judging starts and chat to as many different people as you can.
Take your time and you’ll have a great time with your chosen breed.

I’ve had my dog for about 2 months now. I rescued him from a shelter, he came from an abusive background but he’s a great dog. He’s very aggressive with other dogs though. He growls when he’s near them and I’ve learned that it’s because he wants to get to know them but he doesn’t "introduce" himself properly. A month ago, he was attacked by another dog and it was horrible. I thought he was going to get killed. Thankfully, that didn’t happen but now I’m so afraid when I take him for walks or to the park. I feel like something like that will happen again and I won’t be able to get him out of the situation. The minute I see another dog, I take my dog and we leave. I can’t even enjoy my time out with him because I’m constantly looking for other dogs. What should I do?
I like to use Iams kitten kibble as a teaching treat. Put a handful in your pocket. take your dog for a walk, and as soon as people approach, just before he would normally bark, make a signal, such as ‘tsk-tsk’, and give him a treat. As the people are passing, continue to give him a few kibbles. If he doesn’t bark, give loads of praise. Don’t scold him if he does bark, but ignore it. keep this up for a couple of weeks, if walked daily, and he will get the point, and begin wagging his tail, and looking to you as soon as people or dogs approach.
In your home, do much the same. However, a firm ‘No Bark’ is in order in your home, and make him back away from guests. You must be the boss in your own home, he shouldn’t be allowed to be rude to guests. Reward good behavior with affection or treats.
