I have 5 puppies that are 6 weeks old. There mom ran off and never came back. For the past 3 weeks I have been feeding the puppies 2% milk. How old the puppies have to be before I can give them puppy chow?
Talk to your vet about their nutritional needs. They should NOT be on cows milk at this point. They should be eating puppy milk replacer. At this point, it is feesible to soak some high quality dry food in the puppy milk replacer and mix a little canned food in to make a mush sort of meal for them. But again, you really should talk to your vet about their needs, both nutritional and their vaccination needs. They are no longer getting proteins from mom to boost their immunity.

My mom and I were talking about our dog, which a miniature pincher, and she told me that they are made up of 5 different dog breeds. Is this true? If so, what dog breeds is it mixed with?
The Miniature Pinscher is a purebreed, so it is not a mix of breeds. When it was being developed in the 1800s, however, various terriers, Dachshunds, German Pinschers and various other breeds were used.

I’m taking care of some family’s dogs for the week, but I only own one dog. My dog always seems very aggressive towards other dogs, but they seem to be getting along alright. My dog is always trying to lick under the chin of one of the other dogs, and that dog doesn’t seem to like it much. Is that some type of communication, and if yes, what does it mean?
Also…since I’ve got you here
… my dog keeps taking the toys aways from that particular dog. If the one dog starts playing by himself with a toy, or if they start a game of tug of war, my dog starts growling and takes the toy away. Is that how dogs normally play, or is my dog being a bit selfish?
Licking the face/mouth is submission to the other dog, most domimate dogs don’t like it much and will growl and show agression. its what puppies do to mom wolves to invoke… hmm well feeding…. it makes them up chuck food for the pups. older dogs who do this to an alpha is corrected by a growl or just a show of teeth. it also mean ur dog is a bit insecure.
note how the other dog is standing his chest out, head high, tail up. he’s holding his ground, this is a dog that starts a fight with others that want to fight. but ur dog is saying i want to be friends….u are boss. i would correct the aggresser. a light touch on the shoulder or neck. and be sure the dog walks away not u.
taking toys is a normal play at my house, it involes growling and barking…and running around like crazy dogs they chase and play tug o war. but i stop play when it goes beyond playing to being slightly aggressive. i can hear the change of tone in the dogs… a growl deepens to a snarl…and a bark changes to that deep growlish bark. that is like when someone is at the door. they stand differ..like i said above….their brother and have been together their whole lives.
but i can’t see if ur dogs are playing..or if they mean business.

I have 5 puppies and their mother has ran away and I’m worried that they might die if not taken care of properly.
What breed of dog are they Victor???
You will have to bottle feed the pups for about another week every 3 hours around the clock!
Once they are about 4 weeks old you can start to introduce puppy mush to them. It is very easy to make
Puppy mush:
3 cups good quality puppy food crushed up in a blender add warm water just enough to make a runny oatmeal like mush. Pour this into pie pans. Let the pups lap this up ok. Also have a shallow bowl of puppy replacement formula mixed 1/2 & 1/2 with water for them to drink. You can feed them this 4 times a day. You will have to watch them while eating and have a towel ready to clean them up after they eat. Let them drink as much as they want too. after they have all eaten pick up the dishes and then clean the pups up! Mom usually does this.
At 5 weeks old soak the puppy food in warm water until very soft. Break it up with a fork. Feed them this 4 times a day along with water. Get some drip water bottles and allow the pups to drink when every they want too. No need for pupy milk any longer.
6weeks old soak food and feed the pups 4 times a day. Have 2 water bottles for the pups. clean the pups up ok.
7 weeks old soak 1/2 the puppy food add regular puppy dry food into the wet food. Water all the time.
8 weeks old dry puppy food & water.
9 weeks odl rehome the pups their ready for their new homes!
Pat yourself on the back for a job very well done!
Hope this helps!
Right now you should keep the pups warm and safe and well fed. Get them vet checked for worms and have your vet teach you how to give the pups their wormer. Please do not get any over the counter wormers. They dont work and they do make the pups very sick and some can even kill the pups.
Your vet is the very best person to guide you in this matter ok.
ADD: My e-mail is open if you need more help ok

I dont get it. Mom of the two puppies just had a liter of puppies 5 weeks ago. The youngest is getting very upset at his sibling brother. Almost went into a big fight tonite. Over what?
There’s no way to know. If you are not using the best temperament in breeding, they are not going to have the best in their puppies.

Our pomeranian just had three puppies and we were wondering if we arent supposed to touch the pupppies before a certain amount of time. Any tips on keeping the kids away from the puppies. I cannot touch the mom or the puppies either because she is really pertective. Help please. Ideas please.
It honestly does not matter when you touch the puppies. dogs socialize very easily, and just seeing you around will usually be enough. In a couple weeks they will be crawling all over the place and the mom will be sick of them- and very glad you can entertain them.
Maybe you can tell your kids (you didn’t say how old they were) that she just needs some mommy time…or you can tell them they can sit so far away and watch (lay some kind of tape that is a marking point). Kids are going to be curious. That line should be well away from the mother- if she is highly protective, probably a couple feet or maybe the next room.
You do not want to completely isolate her from the family however- that will not help her get over the protectiveness. Depending on her relationship with you (protectiveness stems from the fact that she is either not bonded enough with family or dominant above you). Hopefully by the next time you breed her, you will have a dominant and comfortable relationship with her- then you will be able to touch the pups and mother as much as you would like (provided you give the pups enough time to eat and stay warm!) I was sleeping on the floor by one of our females about to give birth when I was younger (I wanted to watch it) and she woke me up right before her water broke- seeing a birth and helping with raising pups can be fun, as long as you have a good relationship with the mother.
Just sit somewhere outside of that safe area (where you put the barrier for the kids) when you have time and she will eventually get used to you watching her- no matter how protective she is. As the pups get older, she will become less protective and you can start socializing them then. Waiting a month or two is not going to do any damage with a dog’s social nature.

My parents, both in their mid sixties, had to put their dog down a couple weeks ago. They are still grieving but are probably going to get another dog in the spring. Mom wants a dog that’s not too old but I can’t see them dealing with a hyperactive puppy. Their old dog was about 60 pounds but I think they will want a smaller dog this time. Does anyone have suggestions on which breeds are more laid back and easier to train and which ones they should stay away from? Thanks for your suggestions!
I suggest looking into a rescue dog because you can get an adult-geriatric dog that is housetrained and maybe even knows a few tricks! You can go to petfinder.org, type in the breed you want and your zip code, and it will tell you what is in the area. You get descriptions of the dogs from the foster families, and it will tell you the dog’s history, behavior, temperament, etc.
If it were up to me, I’d go for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, poodle, Maltese, Bichon, or Shih Tzu, but I’m partial to toy breeds
Whatever breed you want, I guarantee you can find a calm, adult-aged dog if you look into rescues….

My mom’s friend gave us a 2 month old chihuahua and I don’t know what to feed her. We bought her puppy food but she doesn’t eat it and we serve her warm milk and she drinks that, but I feel that she is too skinny and should gain a little more pounds. Does anyone have any suggestion to what I should give her to eat?
omg! noooo please don’t give her anymore cow’s milk. that will make her very very sick
you want to make sure she eats every 2 hours. chihuahua’s have a super quick metabolism and their blood sugar will drop if not properly fed
get some eukaneuba or bill jack food (dry) and soak it in warm water… they can’t chew hard food yet and canned food is unhealthy and crap.
another good food is rachel ray’s "nutrish" dog food for small dogs… either one will be fine but you need to soften it.
if you notice her shaking bad, or just acting lethargic or sleepy, give her some karo corn syrup. it’s good to have some on hand in case you ever need it. please show your mom this message so she can get the proper stuff!

My chihuahua only obeys me and my mom. She hates everyone else and I want her to be nice to other people, I try yelling at her when she tries snapping at other people, but she ALWAYS continues being mean. Is there a way to teaching her to be nice to people besides me? I don’t want to keep her locked in a room if I have people over. People like her, but she doesn’t like people.
She is frightened of people which is why she snaps.
Fear is displayed by, fighting: which is what she does and becomes agressive, flight: running away, freezing, standing still or laying down without moving and fooling around.
Put her on a lead when anyone comes to your house and ask them no to touch, look or talk to your dog whatever she does, this will start to take the pressure off her and within a short time she will settle down and be less fearful.
Once she doesn’t growl at people allow her off lead and ask them to continue not to look, touch or talk to her, give them a couple of treat and tell them when she comes over to sniff, just to drop the treats onto the floor, make sure you put her back on the lead before they leave as the energy in the room changes when people come and go and she may start acting up again as dogs understand our world through the energy we give off, excited energy is negative energy in the dog world so she will disply fear again in the way she knows that works for her.
Do this for a few weeks with EVERY visitor and you can even set it up and have people call just to train this and don’t push her too quickly, when you think it is going well don’t push it any further stop when she is winning.

Just one week ago, my dog had puppies. I was wondering how old newborn pups have to be before you can start holding them. I have been very careful about handling these newborn puppies ever since they were born.
Also, my mom has this firm belief that newborn puppies will get suck from being handled too much. Is that true?
Also, my mom has this firm belief that newborn puppies will get sick from being handled too much. Is that true?
since i am there from the moment she is giving birth i actually hold them right after they are cleaned and sometimes when they are still in the sack(to help open the sac when mama is too tired) just sit right there with her and hold one puppy at a time that way they also get a feel for human hands touching them, touch them all over from head to tail and everywhere in between.this procedure will help later in life with Dr’s visit when they have to exam in odd places.
