What are the bet ways to keep a chihuahua happy and healthy?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I am in the process of buying a chihuahua, i want to take care of him the best i can. I dont know alot about them other than what i have found online and read about…i am still skeptical about how hard this could possably be..i just want to do what is best for the little boy.If you own a chihuahua or know much about them please give me any tips you can or direct me to a good web site. THANKS!

Chihuahua’s are alert and loyal. Their personality comes in a small package. They become very attached to one or 2 people very easily.
They love being pampered and love all the attention they get from their master.
They are very affectionate but they can be great watchdogs if that’s why you waqnt one.
It does not need much exercise at all. It can get all it’s exercise requirements by just running around the house.
They need only a little grooming each day (depening if you get a short haired chihuahua or a long haired).
You must buy Chihuahua’s from reputable breeders as they will have great dogs for good value. Do not buy from someone in the newspaper or a pet store.
They need approx. 3-4 small meals when they are pups and then 2-3 small meals when they are older. Only buy premium dog food, stay away from home brands because they lack the nutrition that dogs need each day.
You need to brush his/her teeth each day – get them used to this when they are pups to avoid difficulty when they are older.

However, they dont seem to be getting the nutrients that they need from this dog food. Are there any others that I could try giving them? Please help as I dont know what other kind to buy. I have tried a few other brands of dog food but they dont eat it. I appreciate your help.

How to transition puppies to dry dog food?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I have been feeding my puppies water soaked dry dog food mixed with canned but now they need to start eating it dry to keep teeth in good shape. But all they do is eat the canned food and leave all the dry. I am worried they are not eating enough now but still they cannot eat their dry food soaked in water all the time! Help!

I made this same error with my dog. He would eat the canned food and leave the dry. Eventually, I gave him dry food only and stopped everything else cold turkey. For a day or so, he would sniff the food and turn his nose up at it, but once he got hungry he ate! A dog will not starve itself, so my advice would be to stop soaking the food and stop the canned food altogether. Be strong and don’t give in—your dogs will get hungry and eat the kibble dry on their own. In the meantime, offer NOTHING ELSE, not even a dog buscuit! And DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES start switching around brands of dog food. Offer only the food you have been giving, and trust me—they will get hungry and they will eat it.

How do you keep dog from eating the cat food and cat from eating the dog food?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I have a cat and am planning on getting a dog. My cat loves food and has eaten from my friend’s dog food when she was visiting. I want to get a golden retriever and I’ve heard they’re big on eating. How would I keep the food away from one another?

put the cat food up where the cat can get at it but the dog cant. (My kitten feeds on top the dog crate in the back corner.)

feed the dog, leave it there for him to eat for 15 minutes if its not all gone pick it up till the next feeding. dont give them a buffet of all the food you can eat. feed them on a scheduel atleast for the dog.

What’s the difference between cat food and dog food?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Obviously cat food has different nutrients than dog food but if my cats eat dog food and my dog eats cat food, will it harm any of them? Is there really that much difference?

Eating the others food once in a while wont do any harm.Dont encourage it or let them, because as you mentioned their nutritional needs are not the same,A strict diet of cat food for a dog,or vice versa would not be healthy at all,but if your dog ocassionally sneaks a bit of the cats food, you have nothing to worry about.

Whats the difference between dog treats and regular dog food?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

More specifically, whats in dog treats thats so different from regular dog food, and makes dogs freak over their treats? Why isnt this just added to regular dog food to make it more appealing to dogs, not that it really matters?

Nothing is different in most, they are cheaply made, most are very high in fat content and have very high ‘flavourings’ in them…not really good food for dogs, but because they are different and are given as a treat they become high value to the dog………….if you fed a bowl of treats a day, they would lose that high value and they certainly wouldn’t give the nutrients required, make your dog fat and un healthy

What type of dog food is safe for dogs with allergens to some foods?

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

they person who gave me the puppy said what the dog was allergic to in the dog food but now doesnt remember what the vet said it was. i was like B something. some kind of number after the B. i need to find out either what it is that it is they dog food of what its called or what type of foods do they have that are already made without it.

Beet? Feed raw, then you won’t need to worry about allergies. Commercial kibbles are mixed with a lot of stuff that dogs don’t need (like rice, oatmeal, barley, wheat, corn, etc.)
