What should I look for in an English bulldog puppy before buying it?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I have always wanted an English bulldog and finally my fiance and I have decided to get one. I understand that bulldogs have lots of health issues but I was wondering if there were any signs to look for before purchasing a puppy.

I don’t have an English Bulldog, but my best friend has had three. My advice would be to check out the breeder, check out the facitilities, are the dogs nice and clean? All the dogs should appear lovable and very sociable. Take a look at the parents, ask to see the pups parents health certificates and vet records, ask or the vets number and give him a call. (Any reputable breeder, despite the dog breed should have NO problem giving you this info.) Also, a good breeder will give you 24-72 hours to get the pup checked out at your own vet and if there are any expensive or life threatening conditions, a good breeder will offer to pay for them, OR replace the puppy. Hope this helps, and good luck with the puppy search! English Bullies are some of the sweetest and most adorable dogs. (other tha APBT’s that is. lol!)

Friday, February 12th, 2010

I saw a brown golden retriever the other day but I cant find it anywhere on the net!

I have my suspicions that it’s a golden retriever mixed with a chocolate Labrador.

Not looking for the chocolate retriever though. It purely should look like the golden retriever but choc brown.

Thanks =)

Could it have been a liver Flat Coated Retriever?

Meet The Powerful Rottweiler Dog Breed

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The Rottweiler is a powerful dog breed but devoted to its family. Descended from the Italian Mastiffs, this is a very old breed that was used as a herding dog during the middle ages. During the 1800s, these dogs were almost extinct but made a comeback in the early 20th century. These dogs are often used as a guard dogs, herding dogs or for tracking.

Part of the American Kennel Club working group, the Rottweiler was admitted to the AKC stud book in 1931. This breed weighs between 85 and 1 30 pounds and stands 22 – 27 inches tall.

This breed has a large body with a massive head and powerful jaws. Despite this, the dark eyes and face havean expression of loyalty and good will. Triangular ears are carried forward in the face is accented by a wide black nose. Typically, the tale is docked and rear dew claws removed. The Rottweiler has a very short thick coat and comes in black with brown markings on the legs, paws, muzzle and cheeks.

Despite its foreboding appearance, the Rottweiler is a very calm dog that is easy to train and devoted to his family. This is a reliable dog that will protect those he loves. But because the dog is so powerful, it is important that you give him firm training so that he does not become aggressive. With proper handling these are loyal and loving companions. The dog actually has a pretty mellow temperament but can also be a good guard dog and is very smart doing well in tracking competitions, obedience lessons and schutzhund.

The Rottweiler dog breed can be prone to hip dysplasia as well as ACL damage and often snores. He can have a tendency to overeat and you need to be careful not to overfeed him. They can also suffer from a condition called entropion which is the narrowing of the slit between his eyelids.

Believe it or not, these big dogs can live in apartments as long as they get plenty of exercise. However, It’s best that they have someplace to run and play even if It is a romp in the park. You must walk them daily.

The rottweiler is one of the easiest dogs to groom and they do not shed much at all. They merely need to be bathed when necessary and brushed with a firm bristle brush.

Does anyone have a female Chihuahua puppy they want to get rid of in Indiana?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

My little girl really wants a puppy, we already have a full grown chihuahua but she wants one of her own, and I read in a book somewhere that chihuahua’s always know their own kind. So I figured anothehr Chihuahua was the best way to go. They are all so expensive in the papers, I need a free one or a really cheap one.

Try an animal shelter, otherwise you won’t be able to get one free, unless it has major issues with it’s health (which will end up costing you more money) or personality. If you want a Chihuahua, then just pay the price, otherwise get another small dog breed.

German Shepherd Origin and History

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

The German Shepherd dog breed has its origin in the late 1800s when Max von Stephanitz from Germany began developing a breed that would later become the dog we know today as the German Shepherd.Von Stephanitz desired to produce a dog breed that could be utilized as an all-around working dog.

Developed from various farm and herding dogs of his time, von Stephanitz’s original German Shepherd was derived from a herding dog he acquired in 1899, and he and his friend Artur Meyer formed the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde which was the first club in the German Shepherd dog breed history. This club and von Stephanitz kept tight control over the breed until his death in 1936.

He determined which dogs would be used to breed based on how well they did in various shows and trials that were the precursor to the Schutzhund tests still performed today. His main criteria for judging a dog’s success were both its usefulness coupled with its intelligence. Von Stephanitz also promoted the utility of the breed to the German government for work in both the police and the military as well as other all-purpose uses as a working dog breed.
German Shepherd Breed History

Following the creation of the German Shepherd breed by von Stephanitz in the early 1900s, the breed’s popularity soon soared and became one of Germany’s most popular dogs. Serving in both World War I and II, the German Shepherd was a favorite military dog, primarily in Germany, but American and British soldiers were also impressed by the breed and brought the dog home following both wars.

In fact, one of the most popular German Shepherds dogs was Rin Tin Tin, originally from France, and brought to America by an American GI following the first world war. Rin Tin Tin went on to make 26 movies until his death in 1932 and contributed to the breed’s enormous popularity.

In addition to its use in the police and military arenas, German Shepherds have a history of usefulness in other areas, is known as a successful show dog and has been a popular family pet. German Shepherds were the first dogs used as seeing eye dogs in the late 1920s and Helen Keller, an avid dog lover, owned a couple of German Shepherds.

The first german shepherd Club in America was formed in 1913 and the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908. Instantly recognizable, the German Shepherd continues to be a popular dog breed, and the German Shepherd is continually in the top five most popular registered breeds as determined by the AKC.
