Owning a Chihuahua can be quite an adventure, as I’m sure most owners of this breed can attest to.
On one hand you’ve got this cute little dog that everyone wants to hold and pet. On the other hand, if you’re a stranger, you’ll be lucky to have four fingers left when you try, because it might just bite one off. This is because of the Chihuahuas extreme loyalty to those he’s familiar with, and his not appreciating what he feels might be an infringement of his territory.
Chihuahuas can also be an adventure to own simply by virtue of their attitudes. Hang around one for any length of time and you’ll notice that this little dog doesn’t seem to know that it’s little! Because of this, they’re often referred to as the little dog, with the big dog attitude. They can be aggressive toward other pets, and can bark up a storm over the littlest thing, which in most cases is bigger than the actual dog itself.
Even though the above mentioned characteristics can be interesting to say the least, more endearing qualities are those of the Chihuahuas extreme loyalty to those he’s familiar with. Also, this puppy has a high energy level and spunk, that can brighten anyone’s day.
Because of these diverse qualities, naming this pooch can prove a bit of a challenge. Should you choose any dog name? Or look for Chihuahua Names that best reflect it’s small size, or even it’s humorous big dog attitude?
Since we felt this unique pooch deserves a unique name, we’ve come up with some Chihuahua dog name suggestions that cover both it’s small size and it’s big attitude. Here’s some ideas from our dog names website …
Dog Names That Sound Small…
Bambi, Bonbon, Bugsy, Butterball, Button, Cuddles, Doodle, Gumball, Junior, Kewpie, Laptop, Munchkin, Nibbles, Nipper, Peanut, Peewee, Puddles, Putt-Putt, Squeaky, Squirt, Tinkerbell

Attila, Big Shot, Boomer, Bruno, Bunyan, Butkus, Capone, Genghis, Grizzly, Hercules, Hulk, Jaws, Kahuna, Kong, Manley, Moose, Muscles, Rambo, Samson, Sarge, Stallion, Sumo, Terminator, Ulysses, Wookie, Yukon, Zeus
In closing, it’s important to remember that when naming any dog, Chihuahua or otherwise, not to give him a name that might cause him to be mocked or made fun of. When searching for the perfect male or female Chihuahua name, these names were suggested hoping to get your creative juices flowing, and start you off on the right paw.

I am trying to house train my chihuahua. Sometimes she will go on the pad, but sometimes she won’t. Are there any tricks to training her ?
Chihuahuas can be difficult to house break. Mine never would use the pad. I finally put her outside one day and left her for several hours. The weather was nice and she had plenty of food, water, and shade. She marked her territory in the back yard and I didn’t have much trouble with her after that, but I did have to pay attention to when she was eating and drinking and send her out quickly afterwards.
We’ve moved twice since we got our dog and each time I’ve made sure she went straight to the back yard as soon as she got to the new house. I let her stay there long enough to find her "territory" then let her in the house. She now tells me she needs to go out, even in the middle of the night. The only time she has an accident in the house is when I’m gone and my husband has his nose stuck in the TV and isn’t listening when she asks to go outside.
If you’re in an apartment or can’t let her outside for some reason, you may need to confine her to one area long enough to make her understand that she needs to do her business there and nowhere else in the house.
If she has already urinated on the carpet or even other flooring, try cleaning the spots with vinegar and water. It will help prevent her returning to that spot to repeat the dirty deed.
Good luck and enjoy your precious dog!

I just moved into this nice neighborhood, and my neighbor says she is a reputable rottweiler breeder. I’ve seen a couple of her dogs (she said she has
and they look ok.
She offered me a puppy for $300, is this a fair price? Should I buy it?
I dont think she is a BYB because most of those just breed small dogs, like poodles and chihuahuas.
I knew this was going to happen with everybody saying things only about the designer breeds and saying things like all of them are coming from byb’s and saying how can we put a stop to designer breeds and not saying anything about purebreds or large breed dogs that you can get from byb’s. I’m starting to think that people don’t like small mixed breeds. It’s very sad! Any dog, any type can come from a byb. I have a Doberman that i got from a byb. Yep i went to there house met the parents of the puppies… I thought everything was great get the dog home and the next thing you know i spent lots on vet bills. Not that i mind cause i love my dog and i loved him from day one it’s just that i was mad at the breeders. So don’t think for one min. that byb’s don’t breed large breeds or purebreds cause they do. I would defiantly check really hard into them cause $300.00 is a steal. Something has to be wrong. Check in to any breeder before you buy. Sometimes people are tricky so be careful. There are good breeders out there so if you want a Rottweiler find a good breeder. You will pay more, but it’s worth it if that is what you want. Good Luck!

My girl chihuahua and but chihuahua were mating. Then out of no where my buy chihuahu’s thing gets stuck in my girl chihuahua’s butt.Is this bad. What does it mean.
Get your dogs fixed as you know nothing about breeding animals.
Its called tying. Male canine have knots that form at the base of their penises that lock them inside the female while ejaculation occurs. None tying breeding does occur but there are greater chances for pregnancy with a tie. Eventually the knot swelling will go down and the male will slip out.
Please get both of your animals fixed. You don’t need to be breeding and least of all chihuahuas.
Basset: Nice one

If you want a dog that is loyal, lively, intelligent and you can carry around in your pocket than the Chihuahua might be for you!
This tiny dog that originates from Mexico was actually introduced to the rest of the world by the Chinese. It Can weigh under 2 1/2 pounds and is one of the smallest breed of dogs. Thought to be a sacred dog of pre-Colombian Indians this breed is fiercely loyal and bonds with his owner.
These little dogs can come in almost any color combination and are often seen in a tan and black combination, fawn and brown. One of the more desirable colors is chocolate which is a dark milk chocolate color and they can also be a chestnut color, silver color or a blue as well as multicolored. This dog has a short stout body with a round apple shaped head the dark eyes and the large years that stand erect. One of the interesting aspects of Chihuahua puppies is that their skull plates do meet leaving a hole called a molera. This will eventually closes by the time they become adults but you will need to be careful with your Chihuahua puppy.
The Chihuahua is energetic and loving. Chihuahuas are often seen licking their owners face and while they love to give affection they also love to receive it. Most Chihuahuas will bond with their owner and be wary of strangers and other animals. If you want your Chihuahua to get along good with people and animals you should socialize him from an early age and be sure he’s handled by lots of people. Chihuahuas do seem to like other Chihuahuas however, so if you want more than one pet you might consider getting two Chihuahuas! As you might imagine Chihuahuas need to be weary of other moving objects as they are so tiny and can easily be hurt. For this reason chihuahuas and small children are not a good mix. The Chihuahua, although he may seem feisty, is very delicate and can easily hurt by a small child that doesn’t know any better.
Although Chihuahuas are very smart they may be a little difficult to train especially when it comes to housebreaking. Many owners simply paper train them or you could use a dog litter box as they are tiny enough to make this worthwhile. But being as they are intelligent they can learn many tricks and obedience if you take the time to train them with positive reinforcement. Chihuahuas, or any dog for that matter, do not respond well to yelling and hitting and this should never be used as a method of training.
The Chihuahua can be a bit noisy and is also aggressive even for its tiny size. As you can imagine a larger dog may seem very threatening to your tiny Chihuahua but he will stand up to it with great courage. Therefore you should protect your Chihuahua from such threats even if the other dog is friendly.
Although Chihuahuas are tiny and they do make good apartment pets they do need some exercise. Playing with your Chihuahua and taking him for a walk will help him remain fit and in good health. When walking your Chihuahua it’s best to use a harness as opposed to a collar said their tiny wind pipes can become crushed with a collar. Just remember, if it is cold out, please dress your Chihuahua in a sweater as these dogs do not take well to the cold.
Chihuahuas are long-lived for small dogs and can live up to 15 years with the proper care. Since their eyes are large care needs to be taken that they don’t become damaged and Chihuahuas can also be prone to glaucoma and dryness of the eyes. Due to a short snout the Chihuahua can also be wheezy. You also need to be careful with these tiny dogs that you do not overfeed them and you do not feed them anything that is toxic as a little teeny bit of chocolate or fertilizer or anything toxic can have drastic results. Not to mention that a little bit of overfeeding can result in an overweight and unhealthy dog.
The short coated dogs are easy to groom and care for and shed very little. You should brush your Chihuahua every week or so and give him a bath to keep them smelling great. Make sure to give your dog the appropriate vet care including yearly checkups and immunizations and you will have a loyal and affectionate friend for many years to come.

Sometimes called a Pomchi or even a Chiranian, the Chihuahua Pomeranian mix is not a breed itself, but is a mixture of a Pomeranian and a chihuahua. Mixing these two breeds can make for a pretty darn cute little dog!
This mixed breed dog weighs between 5 and 12 pounds and is a short dog that is intelligent and alert often having the sweet expression characteristic of both sides of its lineage. He has a short body and a rounded wedge-shaped head with round eyes that should not protrude too much like that of some Chihuahuas. The tail is medium in length and is carried in the loop over the back or flat but should never be tucked between the legs.
Since the Chihuahua Pomeranian mix can be the product of a shorthaired or long hair to allow a bit type of coach you may get with this dog can be varied. The coat could be a double coat like that found on the Pomeranian or it could be a single coat. It is usually at least medium length, although I do see some that have short hair much like a short haired Chihuahua. They usually have quite a furry tail typical of the Pomeranian.
The Pomchi can be any color much like its parent’s. Common color variations include party college, sable, solid and merle.
Although each dog is individual, generally the Chihuahua Pomeranian mix will have much the same personality traits of his parents. In general both Chihuahuas and Pomeranians are very intelligent dogs that love to be with their family and are great lapdogs. They can learn tricks very easily, however house training may be a challenge. When training any small dog like this you need to remember that training with kindness is best. These tiny creatures do not respond well to punishment and positive reinforcement is your best bet to get your Ponchi house broken.
A Pomeranian Chihuahua mix that is long-haired will require more grooming than a short haired dog. You will probably need to trim the hair that grows out in between the pads on the bottom of his dainty little feet as well as a little sani-trim under the tail.
Another thing to watch out for in grooming is the gunk that can accumulate around their eyes. You want to be very careful that this does not build up as it can turn into a hardened glob that is nearly impossible to get off and you can actually hurt your dog when trying to remove it. Your best bet is to gently clean around the eyes each night, being careful not to poke your dog in the by, and this will help stop any buildup from accumulating as well as help to take care of any tears staining in the fur around the eyes.
As with many toy dogs, this mix will also have to have a good dental program in place. This includes not only taking him to the vet once a year to have his teeth checked and to have any tartar scraped, but also regular brushing. Bacteria buildup on the teeth is a common problem of small dogs they can be very hazardous to their health so it’s worth it for you to get your Pomchi used to having his teeth brushed. If you use a flavored toothpaste that he likes you may even find he looks forward to it every night!
Hybrid dog mixes are becoming more and more popular and the American Canine Hybrid Club has even recognized the Chihuahua Pomeranian mix and given it the name “Chiranian”. There is even a special club for this hybrid called the Pomchi Club Of America.
